  • Imagine Paris submerged-The Louvre, the National Assembly, and the iconic Concorde as part of a massive lake. This isn't fiction; it happened in 1910, and experts warn it could happen again.
A modern-day flood could paralyze the capital, forcing thousands to evacuate, cutting off water, electricity, and transportation for months. With 5 million lives at risk and damage costs soaring to 30 billion euros, scientists and experts have been working for over 15 years to prevent this disaster.
In this gripping documentary, we explore the looming threat of a flood that could be more devastating than ever, fueled by global warming.

National Geographic, February 2011, posted an article, "Under Paris" which talked about the old underground tunnels all around Paris. These very tunnels could cause major problems, once the flood waters start to seep into these tunnels causing the above ground to create sink holes, large enough to undo all the protective walls around buildings that have been newly built. Underground mining in the future, if not backfilled with rock, will cause the earth's crust to become unstable, which could cause earthquakes. All underground mining should be backfilled, keeping the magma heat (1,860 Degree-Fahrenheit) below the earth's crust. If continuous heat rises, temperatures will rise, causing massive rain, and flooding!

Wow, wow, wow, let’s slow down and avoid jumping to quick conclusions. 😉
First, you’re right that floods have existed long before the Industrial Revolution, and no one is saying that climate change invented floods. However, what climate change is doing is making extreme weather events-like floods-far more frequent and severe. This isn’t just speculation, but something we’re seeing globally. The increase in greenhouse gases has disrupted weather patterns, causing more intense storms, rising sea levels, and heavy rainfall, which all contribute to more dangerous floods.
Moreover, the speed at which the climate has been shifting due to human activity is outpacing the ability of cities to adapt. Urban infrastructure, particularly in older cities like Paris, wasn’t designed to handle this new normal. On top of that, there are significant political and economic challenges in funding and implementing necessary upgrades.I mean, can you believe there is people who still think Climate Change isn't real?
So, while floods have always been a natural occurrence, the reality is that climate change has made them more unpredictable and dangerous-and cities now face a much greater challenge in protecting their populations.

So many art treasures are dis-layer at many art museums in Paris. How could they ever move everything to higher ground? And in the rain... Even at ground level, moving art and sculpture somewhere sounds so challenging. Of course, one thinks of Parisians and their welfare first, but I think the world's greatest art is part of being a Parisian.

As Ulrich Beck argued back in the 80's, natural hazards (like volcanoes, earthquakes, or floods) exist, but it’s human decisions-such as where we build cities, infrastructure, and how we manage resources-that turn these natural events into “risks.”
Floods only become dangerous when human settlements are located in flood-prone areas without adequate protections in place. So let's get to work !
